Municipal Elections Compliance Audit Committee Recruitment

Municipal Elections Compliance Audit Committee Recruitment

A group of Durham Region’s municipalities and the Durham District School Board are recruiting experienced professionals for appointment to their 2026 Municipal Election Compliance Audit Committees.

Compliance Audit Committees are required by the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 to consider requests for audits of candidates’ and registered third party advertisers’ campaign finances. Committees may be required to appoint auditors and determine if legal proceedings are required against candidates, campaign contributors, or registered third party advertisers for contraventions of municipal election campaign finance laws.

Applicants with a background in accounting, auditing, law, academics, election administration, and/or public administration are preferred. Applicants should have:

•            Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of municipal elections, including campaign finance rules;

•            Proven analytical and decision-making skills;

•            Experience working on committees, boards, adjudicative bodies, task forces, or similar settings;

•            Demonstrated knowledge of quasi-judicial proceedings;

•            Availability and willingness to attend meetings during daytime and evening hours; and

•            Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Successful applicants who register as a candidate or a third party advertiser, or contribute to or otherwise support a campaign, will become ineligible to serve on Compliance Audit Committees. Applicants also cannot be Members of Council or current employees of the Participating Bodies of the Joint Compliance Audit Committee.

The Committee’s term of office is four years, beginning in November 2026. Successful applicants will receive the following remuneration:

•            A retainer of $400 for the four-year term, which will include participating in one mandatory training session and any preparation/review time required for meetings; and

•            A minimum remuneration of $400 per meeting attended, plus an additional $100 for each additional Application or report being considered after the first at a meeting (plus mileage).

Applicants may be required to participate in an interview process.
