Front Line Adjudicator Training (FLAT)

This interactive two 1/2 day course is designed for ministry, agency, tribunal staff (federal, provincial and municipal) who gather information, perform research, investigate and make decisions or recommendations about benefits or violations under legislation, regulations and professional codes, without holding a hearing.
Through lectures and small-group work, participants will learn about their role as decision-makers within their respective organizations as well as administrative law, statutory interpretation, information gathering; and decision-making. Participants will have the opportunity to work through a case study in small groups with the assistance of our expert facilitators and faculty.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

Enhance their role as decision-makers for their agency/ministry/organization/regulator;

Understand and apply the basic principles of administrative law, including procedural fairness and natural justice, to their work;

Apply methods of reading and interpreting legislation;

Gather relevant information for decision-making process and identify the issues within the context of the relevant legislation;

Incorporate the steps in the decision-making process to their work as front line decision-makers.
