Municipal Elections Compliance Audit Committee Recruitment

A group of Durham Region’s municipalities along with the Durham District School Board are recruiting experienced professionals to form a roster of eligible members for appointment to their 2018 Municipal Election Compliance Audit Committees.

Compliance Audit Committees are required by the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 to consider applications requesting audits of candidates’ and registered third party advertisers campaign finances. Committees may be required to appoint auditors and determine if legal proceedings are required as a result of the auditors’ reports, or reports from the Clerk.

Applicants with a background in accounting, auditing, law, election administration, and/or public administration are preferred. Applicants should have:

Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of municipal elections, including campaign financing rules;

Proven analytical and decision-making skills;

Experience working on committees, task forces or similar settings;

Demonstrated knowledge of quasi-judicial proceedings;

Availability and willingness to attend meetings during daytime and evening hours; and

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Applicants cannot be candidates or registered third party advertisers in the 2018 Municipal Election nor can they have committed to providing professional advice to any person running for office in any Durham Region municipality. Applicants also cannot be Members of Council or current employees of any Durham Region municipality or school board having jurisdiction in Durham Region.

The Committee’s term of office is four years, beginning in December 2018. Successful applicants will receive a retainer of $400 for the four year term which will include one mandatory training session and any preparation/review required, and a per-meeting remuneration of $350 (plus mileage).
