The Ombudsman is an independent, impartial office of the Ontario Legislature that resolves and investigates public complaints about Ontario government organizations and municipalities, universities and school boards. The Ombudsman has made a difference in the lives of millions of Ontarians by recommending solutions to administrative problems and promoting fairness, accountability and transparency in the public sector.
Every day, our Legal Counsel positively impact Ontarians, investigating serious and complex cases, preparing investigative reports, negotiating changes to practices, policies and legislation, and providing legal advice and support to the Ombudsman’s operations. Working as a member of a collaborative and high-performing team of lawyers, Legal Counsels’ work may also include policy development, contract preparation, outreach and litigation.

Applicants must have:
A minimum of 2 years experience as legal counsel, and be licensed by the Law Society of Upper Canada
Good working experience researching, analyzing and applying administrative law or in other relevant areas of practice
Demonstrated ability to research complex issues, use sound judgment, and provide legal advice and support
Strong written and oral communication skills
Proven ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
Strong interpersonal skills with the capacity to coach others through complex issues
Experience with municipal or education law and/or experience conducting administrative investigations would be considered an asset
