The Ombudsman is an independent, impartial office of the Ontario Legislature that resolves and investigates public complaints about Ontario government organizations and municipalities, universities and school boards. The Ombudsman has made a difference in the lives of millions of Ontarians by recommending solutions to administrative problems and promoting fairness, accountability and transparency in the public sector.
Every day, our legal team positively impacts Ontarians, investigating serious and complex cases, preparing investigative reports, negotiating changes to practices, policies and legislation, and providing legal advice and support to the Ombudsman’s operations. Reporting to General Counsel, Senior Counsel is responsible for implementing the strategic direction of the legal team through mentoring and leadership, including responsibility for the legal student program. In this focused and high-performing team, the Senior Counsel also handles a caseload of escalated and challenging files.

Applicants must have:
A minimum of 8-12 years experience in administrative or public law with a minimum of 5 years leading and mentoring Counsel
Licence from the Law Society of Upper Canada
Exceptional written and oral communication skills
Proven ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
Experience conducting administrative investigations in an oversight environment
Strong interpersonal skills with the capacity to coach others through complex issues
Superior personal and professional integrity
Experience in education or municipal law would be considered an asset
