City of Toronto Seeking Residents to Serve on the Toronto Local Appeal Body

Do you have a background in zoning, adjudication, mediation, or land use planning? The City of Toronto is seeking skilled and experienced applicants to join its new Local Appeal Body.

What is the Toronto Local Appeal Body?

The Toronto Local Appeal Body (TLAB) is an independent quasi-judicial tribunal that hears appeals of Committee of Adjustment decisions for minor zoning variances and land severances (consents). It assumes all the powers and authority of the Ontario Municipal Board for hearing these appeals. The City of Toronto is seeking seven public members to serve on this body, including one as Chair.

What do TLAB members do?

TLAB members will review applications, conduct site inspections and mediations, preside over hearings and write decisions.

The Chair of the TLAB has additional responsibilities including ensuring the fairness, effectiveness, and quality of TLAB decisions, acting as spokesperson, obtaining external legal advice as needed, chairing business meetings, and leading other communication and administrative duties.

Applicants should have expertise in such areas as adjudication, mediation, land use planning and planning law, be clear and concise communicators, have high ethical standards and integrity, and respect for justice, diversity, and accommodation.
