The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) is the statutory body responsible for regulating Ontario's capital markets in accordance with the mandate established in the provincial Securities Act and the Commodity Futures Act. The Commission's mandate is to provide protection to investors from unfair, improper or fraudulent practices and to foster fair and efficient capital markets and confidence in capital markets.

The Office of the Secretary to the Commission provides support to Members of the OSC in their responsibility as regulators, as Board Directors, and as adjudicators. The Branch provides counsel to the Members on adjudicative
matters and administrative law, corporate law and corporate governance. As well, the Office of the Secretary is responsible for the fair, impartial, and efficient operation of the Commission's adjudicative proceedings.
Responsibilities include:
Reporting to the Acting Secretary to the Commission, you will provide counsel to the Commission's Adjudicative Panels with respect to hearings and related matters. Senior Legal Counsel will review all submissions, prepare legal memoranda, provide legal research and drafting assistance to Panel Members and give legal advice to the Panel on complex procedural and substantive matters as required during the course of hearings. Senior Legal Counsel will participate in the Adjudicative Committee meetings and attend the Commission's Adjudicative Policy Sessions, assist in identifying important adjudicative policy and procedural matters of a general nature for consideration by the Commission. This role will also provide work guidance to staff in the Secretary's Office and assist the Acting Secretary to resolve issues related to Hearings and related matters.
You offer the following:
The successful candidate should be a lawyer called to the Bar of a Canadian province with at least 10 years experience in litigation with experience before civil courts and/or administrative tribunals, or as Counsel to an administrative tribunal. The candidate's experience should be at the level of sole counsel having primary carriage of a matter and also have a broad understanding of evidentiary and advocacy issues. Significant knowledge of public law, including administrative law is required. Leadership experience providing guidance and supervision to staff is required. Critical for success in this role is the ability to interact effectively with various tribunal stakeholders, and to manage complex and sensitive matters.
Previous experience as Counsel to administrative tribunals will be considered a significant asset. Fluency in both French and English will be an asset.
